Real Steel Band at the Millennium building

Throughout August 2024, Plymouth locals Real Steel Band used The Millennium’s iconic auditorium to rehearse ahead of Notting Hill Carnival.

The 50-piece steel drum band started at Estover Community College all the way back in 1989 and are still going strong. The band approached us about needing a big space to practice before competing for the title of Europe’s best steel band at Notting Hill Carnival, so we provided them with a temporary home in return for a very special sneak peak of their final rehearsal at The Millennium.

It was a night to remember that showed off the potential of this much-loved building in all its glory. The band were on top form, the crowd was buzzing and it was a great reminder of why we wanted to secure this building for local people for generations to come.

Thanks to a crew of staff and volunteers and the band’s incredible performance we were able to welcome nearly 200 people into the building and raise £465 for this year’s Union Street Party!
