A different way to plan for change and take action.
Over the last 6 years we have learnt a lot about what holds Union Street and our community back from making lasting change.
Community ownership and local solutions are key to creating a future that is resilient and provides opportunity for local people.
So far we have been tactical and disruptive and our community has come together to make a real difference, but there is a lot more to do.
Now it’s time to become more strategic, be brave and take action together so we build on what is working and open the doors for others who want to create change.
To do this we are working with lots of different people to create a Mistress Plan and a Land Exchange.
Mistress Plan
We are creating a Mistress Plan together with our community. You are invited to join in!
A Mistress Plan is a set of guidelines and ways of working that create the conditions and focus for us all take action and make positive lasting changes on the street.
On Tuesday 23 April 2024 we hosted an event at The Plot. Over 70 people came along to look at what could be included in the plan and add their ideas. We left all the resources up to give as many people the chance to join in as possible.
We will now be launching the Mistress Plan in June 2024 - look out for more details coming soon.
Data Action Assembly in October 2024 - See what is starting to happen, check out the data and come together to see if together we are creating the kind of change we want to see.
Thanks to support from Plymouth Octopus Project and Esmee Fairbairn we will be redrafting and bringing fresh voices and ideas together ready to launch the Mistress Plan this year.
This follows on from working with a local advisory group, national experts and Incremental Urbanism and Vacancy Atlas in 2022 thanks to support from the Community Renewal Fund.

The Land Exchange will be able to secure finance and purchase property or land to bring it into lasting community ownership. This will:
Decrease the barriers to local people and organisations who need space and want to contribute positively to the local area.
Address the long term impact empty properties and neglected land have in our community.
Challenge the power dynamics and extractive economic approaches that hold communities like ours in poverty
We are piloting this approach in and around Union Street and Stonehouse with a view to this being able to support landownership issues in other communities in the city.

Land Exchange
We know from experience that the key to creating lasting change in a community comes down to who owns the land and buildings.
This is why we are working with key partners including Plymouth Culture, Plymouth Octopus Project, Plymouth Social Enterprise Network, Real Ideas and others to set up a Land Exchange.
